Stop Feeling Empty

How to Stop Feeling Empty?

We are like lutes once held by God. Being away from His warm body fully explains this constant yearning.- Hafiz
Our yearning for things of this world is a yearning for God. We were once with Him in His loving embrace. We are now away from Him and have forgotten about our relationship with Him but the experience of the real thing- Real Absolute Love has still remained.
We try out different things in the material world, to check if they are the real thing. Its like searching for the taste of the best carrot cake you had when you were four. Ever since, you measure the taste of every carrot cake you eat with the one you relished the most when you were four.
Your search goes on till you find the one thats tastes exactly the same.
Matter cannot satisfy our yearning
We are looking to be happy , satisfied and feel loved. We are on a pursuit of something that will truly and eternally satisfy.  Beauty, clothes, jewelery, shoes, model homes, five star vacations – some of the things the  flourishing advertising industry promises. Or something subtle – writing a best seller, winning an election, gaining a promotion, inventing a world changing product, getting maximum likes on your facebook profile picture. All this helps you feel good about yourself because a little love has flowed your way, in the form of recognition, praise, or appreciation. As quickly as we become happy on receiving these, we also feel the loss as these go away because these physical and subtle pleasures are like waves. They recede as fast. We go back to feeling unloved.
From John Welwood’s book, Perfect Love Imperfect Relationships
“At bottom, most of the things we strive for – security, success, wealth, status, power, recognition, validation, praise are ways of trying to fill a gaping hole within us, a hole formed out of our separation from love. As ways of trying to win love indirectly, these substitute gratifications do not truly nourish us, because they do not deliver the real thing. In that sense, they are like junk food. Their failure to truly nourish only intensifies our inner hunger, driving us to run all the harder on the hamster wheel of success, desperately hoping to win some reward that will truly satisfy.”
We come back with more force to satisfy our yearning, but we again look in the same rubble which is, what it is, a rubble. You find nothing and we remain in the cycle of searching in the wrong place.
Search in the right place
We belong to a different realm, the spiritual realm. Our search will meet with success if we look for that happiness and satisfaction in the spiritual realm. Just like a fish can live and be completely nourished only in the water , similarly our souls being spiritual by nature can be completely happy when we are properly situated in a loving relationship with the all loving Lord.
In the Bhagavad Gita verse 18.54, Lord Krsna says ” One who is thus transcendentally situated at once realizes the Supreme Brahman and becomes fully joyful. He never laments or desires to have anything. He is equally disposed toward every living entity. In that state he attains pure devotional service unto Me.”
God who is known as Lord Krsna in the Bhakti Tradition is the fountainhead of all love. A true relationship of loving service to Him is the end to the search for ever lasting happiness, complete satisfaction and a mind undisturbed by constant yearning for matter.
A Daily Spiritual practice is important to remind ourselves about that connection.
HH Radhanath Swami a teacher in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition says
“People are starving for God’s love.  They are lonely. But they have created a whole system to run away and hide their minds with all kinds of material, relative, superficial and useless activities.  Why is television so popular?  Not because the programs are so good, but because the people are so bored, they cannot tolerate their thoughts.  They do not want to face them. Therefore, they have to find some source of forgetting them. In the old days, people used to do athletics, sports and all kinds of other social events. Today, they take a sleeping pill and just snore off forgetting everything. And if that does not work, they drink some alcohol or take some intoxication to enhance the effect.  They work so hard to create the devices to forget the loneliness within their own hearts. Learn to love God.
Love of God is what our soul is hankering for.  It is the only thing that will make us feel the joy in our life.  Nothing else will work. The soul is part of God; it longs to unite with God. Nothing else can replace that relationship.
How to build that relationship?
Worship the Lord with faith and devotion, and work to forget the loneliness.
